Scabies is a contagious disorder or infection of the skin that is caused by tiny and microscopic wingless insects or mites called Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis and the presence of these mites on a human being may be very difficult to reveal. The female mite excavates a burrow on the skin in which she lays two to three eggs per day. The eggs hatch a few days later and the baby mites make their way to the skin surface thus continuing the re-infestation process. Due to the infection’s contagious character, scabies can cause serious epidemics in overcrowded schools, kindergartens, orphanages and nursing homes.
The scabies incubation period is between 1 and 2 weeks when most symptoms occur. The disease is easily acquired through physical contact with an infected person or contaminated objects. Scabies parasites can live for up to a week without a host, so personal items including towels, clothing and bed linens among others must be thoroughly washed in hot water to prevent the spread and even a second infestation.
